51: Zappa Dummy

NPR’s Protojournalist published a list of 6 odd college courses in America. On the list is a course on the music of Frank Zappa. The course was developed by Andy Hollinden at Indiana University. Holliden’s interest in Zappa first manifested itself while he was in high school. Beyond listening to the music and poring over linear notes, Andy constructed a dummy of Frank Zappa that would later provide him with more insight and memories than he had ever imagined.

  1. Having a course on Frank Zappa does not seem any more odd than having a course on any classical composer. Zappa’s music IS the classical music of rock and will live forever.

The dedication of this fan is not unusual. I wonder if he knows about the bust of Zappa that is on display in Vilnius, Lithuania? Rabid fans there pestered the city council until they gave them a small unused piece of land just to get rid of them. I have visited that small monument to Frank Zappa.

I think it says something about change for a country to tear down a monument to Lenin and put one up for Frank Zappa (not in the same place).
